Masters of the spectral side of house and techno - Darkroom Dubs have garnered their loyal following through releases from the likes of Dubspeeka, Pedro Aguiar and Extrawelt. Now, in the follow up to the label bosses "Help Will Come" EP comes the next instalment from a new addition to the roster, the Spanish talent Scan Mode who lines up his "Panama Jaxx" EP.
A member of the Madrid Red Bull Music Academy in 2015 and with previous releases on Cadenza Lab, Esperanza and Surface (H-Foundation's Halo Varga Label) - Scan Mode has had a career in music spanning back to 1998. A writer for DJ Mag and a regular contributor to the Cadenza podcast series - Scan Mode specialises in a Detroit and Chicago inspired meld of progressive melodicism, aquatic synthesis and technical drum work that lends him perfectly to a record with Darkroom Dubs.
His latest offering kicks off with 1.1. Gently swung hats are sat aloft a plunging synth bed. An urgent stutter darts in and is contrasted against soft, allaying pads and propulsive resonance control before 1.2 drives frazzled drums through glacial tones and shimmering synth melodies. 1.3 then navigates a tough, persistent bass sequence under granular drums and a wall of interweaving melodies while deft sequencing has synth lines churning throughout as the pressure is kept high until the finale.
Next up on Darkroom Dubs are some eagerly anticipated releases from Id!r, Skinnerbox and Mariano Mellino. Also we can expect the work of Scan Mode to be included on the long-awaited fourth instalment of the Darkroom Dubs compilation series which is due for release at the turn of the new year.
